Home Worship Guide for May 30, 2021

Home-Worship-page header

This guide aims to equip families, couples, and singles to conduct home worship on the Lord’s Day. Home worship cannot replace the God-ordained purpose and power of corporate worship as the church, but during this time of crisis, we hope it will be used by God to encourage believers and equip husbands, fathers, and spiritual heads to lead their family in worship.

Who should participate in home worship?

We encourage families with children of all ages to participate. We recommend conducting home worship on Sundays at 9:15am (~1 hour). It is advisable for all family members to still wake up at a reasonable hour, change out of their pajamas, eat breakfast, and then gather in the living room.

For singles, we encourage you to connect with a small group of friends over a video-conferencing platform and conduct home worship together.

Who should lead home worship?

In accordance with the pattern set in Scripture, we encourage believing husbands/fathers to lead their families in home worship. In instances where there is not a father in the home or the father is not a Christian, the mother will need to assume this role. Among smaller non-family gatherings, the group can assign the task to conduct the home worship to any believing member. If you are not in a group, the following guide can still be utilized for personal devotion.

What resources are available to help children join home worship?

Here are resources to help your children (who are able to read) follow along with the order of service:

Which language should we use to conduct home worship?

Each family should decide which language is most suitable for all family members. Mandarin and Cantonese worship guides are available.

How can I give during this temporary suspension of services?

Offerings and donations can be given online through HCC’s PayPal Giving Fund. We encourage members to stay the course of faithful generosity to the Lord and the ministry of his church.

Special Word to Members

Call to Worship

Exodus 34:6-7
Leader invites someone to read aloud
Leader then prays for God to prepare everyone’s heart for worship

Recitation of the Apostles’ Creed

  • Leader (L): As we respond to the call to worship, we begin by identifying he whom we worship. Encapsulated in the Apostles’ Creed is an ancient confession of faith that countless believers, throughout the ages, have used to express and affirm the identity of our Triune God, the One God who eternally exists as Three Persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • L + All:

    I believe in God the Father Almighty,
    maker of heaven and earth.

    I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
    who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
    born of the Virgin Mary.
    He suffered under Pontius Pilate;
    was crucified, dead, and buried;
    he descended to the dead*;
    the third day he rose from the dead;
    he ascended into heaven,
    and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
    From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

    I believe in the Holy Spirit,
    the holy universal** Church,
    the communion of the saints;
    the forgiveness of sins;
    the resurrection of the body;
    and the life everlasting. Amen.

    * lit. “hades” meaning the place of the dead
    ** lit. “catholic” meaning universal

I’ll Fix My Eyes | Song Lyrics

Confession of Sin

  • Leader (L): Knowing that we are all sinners saved by grace and that we regularly sin in thought, word, and deed, let us confess our sins together.
  • L+All: Heavenly Father, you have loved us with an everlasting love, but we have gone our own way and rejected your will for our lives. We are sorry for our sins and turn away from them. For the sake of your Son who died for us, forgive us, cleanse us, and change us. By your Holy Spirit, enable us to live for you, and to please you in every way, for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

1 Peter 3:18

Living Hope | Song Lyrics

Responsive Reading (2 Thessalonians 1:5-10)

  • Leader (L): God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you,

  • All (A): And to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us,

  • L: When the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire,

  • A: Inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God

  • L: And on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

  • A: They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction,

  • L: Away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

  • A: When he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints,
  • L: And to be marveled at among all who have believed,

  • A: Because our testimony to you was believed.

Group Prayer

Individuals choose a request and pray aloud

  • Praise God that He is a covenant-keeping God and we can find security in Him.
  • Confess that we focus on our temporary plans instead of God’s eternal plan.
  • Thank God for preparing a place for us in heaven where there will be no more sorrow or suffering.
  • Pray that we will keep watch for His second coming. May we be intentional in looking for opportunity to spread the Good News.
  • Pray that God will give us boldness as we pursue justice and righteousness.
  • Pray that we would hate what is evil and cling to what is good.
  • Pray for next Sunday as the church building reopens for worship services that many will come to praise His name.
  • Pray for the Women’s Bible Study as they start in June. May the ladies bond closer to the Lord as well as to one another.

Leader concludes with a prayer for our hearts to humbly receive the reading and preaching of God’s Word

Christ Our Hope in Life and Death | Song Lyrics

Guided Prayer (by Philip Doddridge, 1709-1751)

  • Leader (L): O Lord, cast us into whatever dangers you please, and we will cheerfully await the happy event which will at length prove the wisdom and kindness of even your most mysterious plans.

  • All (A): In the meantime, even as we travel in the bonds of affliction, may we see your hand in the expressions and encouragement of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

  • L: Let us thank you and take courage in the humble assurance that you will stand by us in every future unknown extreme.

  • A: You will either display your power and goodness by raising up those around us in support – or you will display your all-sufficiency in a yet more glorious way, bearing us up when everything else fails us.

  • L+A: Amen.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
