Sermon Description

The Old Testament in our English bibles aptly ends in Malachi with a word of judgment and warning about a coming day of the LORD. The reader is meant to feel despondent and desperate for salvation in the pages of the New Testament. There we learn that the Day will arrive in stages – before the fiery judgment, comes Elijah who prepares the way for the LORD to swoop down with salvation in his wings.

Sermon Description

In the midst of persecution, the church at Thessalonica still flourished because the Apostle Paul sets the right example for the Thessalonians to follow as a bold proclaimer and as a loving parent.  It is not enough to bring others to Christ, but also to help them to become disciples of Christ.

Sermon Description

The Church in Thessalonica became known throughout all of Macedonia and Achaia because of the example they set for all the believers. Paul encourages the Thessalonians for their Work of Faith, Labor in Love, and Steadfastness in hope in Jesus Christ. As we hope to grow as a flourishing church, we can also look to the church in Thessalonica as an example to follow in faith, love, and hope.

Sermon Description

As the global pandemic rages and the death toll rises, many are wondering why God delays to answer prayers and end this suffering. In John 11, we encounter Martha and Mary who are wondering the same as they suffer the loss of their brother. Jesus's reminder that he is the resurrection and the life are the words we need right now.

Sermon Description

So far in Colossians, Paul has been making a sustained argument that Jesus is a sufficient Savior. That being united to him by faith is enough to experience the fullness of God in salvation. In today’s passage, we get a better sense of the false teaching that had suggested otherwise and a taste of what makes such falsehood so appealing.

Sermon Description

Adding to something changes it. If we add a tire to a bicycle, then it becomes a tricycle. If we add another side to a square, then it becomes a pentagon. When we add something to the gospel, then it ceases to be the gospel. Jesus plus something is no longer salvation in Christ alone through faith alone. What do we do when people say we need more than just faith in Jesus?

Sermon Description

Last week, we saw how Colossians was written to Christians who were told they were spiritually inadequate and had a ways to go. Paul addresses those concerns with a hymn-like passage about the adequacy of Christ and all who hide themselves in him.

Sermon Description

Paul wrote to address false teachers who made you feel incomplete in your faith until you adopted their system of spirituality, which had little to do with Christ. His burden, even at the start of his letter, was to encourage believers who are struggling with spiritual inadequacy. In our text, we see three ways to address feelings of spiritual inadequacy.

Sermon Description

The events of chapter 32 are surprising. The people of God had recently witnessed his hand and heard his voice. Moses had gone to receive instructions for a tabernacle in which God would dwell among them. Things look promising, and yet suddenly they're bowing to a golden calf. First Corinthians 10 says this episode took place to serve as an example of what not to desire and what not to do. So what sessions can we learn?

Sermon Description

On Palm Sunday it's only fitting to consider why Jesus came - not just to Jerusalem that day - but to our world in the first place. Simply put, he came as a Substitute - to take the place of sinners under God's judgment. The events surrounding his trial illustrate this purpose, which can be appreciated from three different perspectives in the narrative.
